Internet en buurtcensuur

Is de hoeveelheid censuur met de ontwikkeling van Internet eigenlijk groter of kleiner geworden? De meeste mensen zullen deze vraag waarschijnlijk met ‘kleiner’ beantwoorden, maar ik stel hier toch wat vraagtekens bij. De oude communicatiemiddelen zoals de telefoon of de brief bevatten namelijk geen instrumentaria voor censuur en dat een krant een bepaalde mening niet publiceert kun je ook geen censuur noemen. De werkelijke censuur ligt in de controle die de grote (vooral amerikaanse) media hebben over het nieuws. Dat een uitspraak van de Iraanse president bewust fout vertaald wordt en uit zijn context wordt getrokken. De voorbeelden zijn legio, maar hier is eigenlijk sprake van censuur op macroniveau. Internet confronteert ons met een nieuw type censuur: de buurtcensuur.

Neem nu bijvoorbeeld eens de poeziescene. Niet zulke smerige woorden gebruiken, Benders, hoor ik u denken maar u moet maar denken hoe kleiner de vijver, hoe beter het zicht op de kikkerbil. Men hoort mensen regelmatig zeggen dat de poezie met internet een ‘enorme vlucht’ heeft genomen. Het begon ooit allemaal met Bart Droog. Bart Droog is een matig getalenteerde dichter die ontdekte dat als je voor iedereen een gratis webpagina maakt op je eigen domein je steeds meer vrienden en bezoekers krijgt. En vrienden en bezoekers, dat is niet alleen macht op internet maar ook in de grote boze mensenwereld daarbuiten!

De driftig tiepende Bart trok na enkele jaren doortiepen wel 300 bezoekers per dag, een getal waar de meeste literaire tijdschriften een jaaroplage voor moeten uitbrengen. Bart merkte dat de beste methode om poeziebezoekers te trekken poezienieuws is. Hoe meer, hoe beter. Maakt niet uit hoe lullig het is. Bart had 12 gouden maanden lang zowaar het monopolie op het nederlandse internetpoezienieuws. Tot de boze fee Chretien Breukers zijn succesformule kaapte. Nu zijn er een paar van deze plekken waar de talpabazen van de toekomst knokken voor hun poeziemonopolie.

Waarom is dat bezwaarlijk, hoor ik u denken. De arme man bewees immers met zijn tiepwerk de ‘poeziescene’ een dienst, nietwaar? Wel, het bezwaarlijke schuilt in het mechanisme zelf: men gebruikt niet het eigen schrijftalent om bezoekers te trekken maar parisiteert op het talent van anderen met eigenlijk maar één werkelijk doel: bezoekers trekken. Het draait uiteindelijk allemaal om macht, zoals wel blijkt als u even de implicaties van deze discussie overweegt. Horendol eigenlijk, om zo de weg kwijt te zijn.

Wie dit soort sites goed bekijkt ziet dat er altijd hetzelfde handjevol mensen reageren. Ik weet uit eigen ervaring dat Breukers er totaal geen moeite mee heeft bijdrages te wissen als ze hem minder welgevallig zijn. Zo’n omgeving is uiteraard voor het bedrijven van polemiek volslagen nutteloos want je weet als lezer nooit of de discussie gemanipuleerd is of niet. De meeste mensen schijnen met dat idee weinig moeite te hebben. Ik heb er wel moeite mee, net zoals ik moeite zou hebben met een postbode die in mijn brieven zou gaan zitten schrappen. Zulke buurtcensuur is op internet aan de orde van de dag; en is altijd met hetzelfde rotsmoesje ter verantwoording: jongens, als ik niet censureer, dan wordt het niet meer fijn om in dit land te wonen… ze krijgen het met de paplepel ingegoten, tegenwoordig…
