Twee film reviews

Author: Niet helemaal legale DVD’s kun je in Istanboel op elke hoek van de straat kopen, dus Benders is goed bij wat nieuwe films betreft. Dat is ook lang niet allemaal Hollywood rommel wat hier te koop is - ik heb bijvoorbeeld nu ook al de volledige filmcollectie van Jan Svankmajer in huis. Mensen die zijn films niet kennen: kopen. De beste vind ik ‘Faust’ en ‘Conspirators of pleasure’ - geniale stop motion films, soort Charms op celluloid.
Deze week heb ik twee films gezien: ‘300’ en ‘Hard Candy’
‘300’ is een tweeenhalf uur durende slapstick cartoon voor mensen die van afgehakte koppen in 3D houden. De film valt op geen enkel moment serieus te nemen. Is dan ook geeent op een cartoonreeks van Frank Miller, maar waar ‘Sin City’ nog aardig te pruimen was is het verhaal in ‘300’ zo irritant slap dat ik de film halverwege heb afgezet. Ik speel liever Doom op de computer, dan hak ik tenminste zelf en is er geen script dat door George Bush zelf is geschreven. De visuals van de film zijn wel aardig, ja, maar ook schromelijk overdreven. De 8,2 die de film op IMDB krijgt is een goed voorbeeld van de onmogelijkheid een democratisch systeem te hebben waar rommel niet komt bovendrijven.
‘Hard Candy’ is meer een arthouse film. Niet helemaal goed, maar tenminste wel enigszins spannend, hoewel de regisseur wel een paar steken laat vallen. Zo heb ik de twist van de film ruim van te voren aan zien komen. De film deed me denken aan de turkse film ‘Mustafa hakkinda hersey’ maar die vond ik eigenlijk qua verhaal een stuk leuker en beter. In beide films worden mensen binnen een huis gegijzeld gehouden. In ‘Hard Candy’ gijzelt een 14-jarig meisje een kinderlokker waarna (iets te hollywood weer) ze live zijn ballen voor de buis verwijderd. Hou je meer van een echte thriller dan is ‘Mustafa’ een stuk beter, hoewel de film in Turkije wat lauwe reacties oproept vond ik hem zelf eigenlijk erg goed.
