Het controleren van de tijdsversnellingen
De tijd heeft, net als een goede fiets, allerlei versnellingen. De mens is in staat deze versnellingen te bedienen door zijn leven op een bepaalde wijze vorm te geven. In de kindertijd loopt de tijd erg traag. Een jaar duurt bijna oneindig lang. Het is mijn opvatting dat deze ‘versnelling’ de natuurlijke tijdstand vertegenwoordigt.
Men groeit echter op en de tijdsbeleving begint te veranderen. De tijd zelf accelereert. Op den duur voel je hoe een jaar bijna als een werkweek voorbij lijkt te gaan. Dat is de toestand waarin ik mijzelf aantrof tussen mijn 20e en 30e jaar. De tijd leek alsmaar sneller te gaan lopen. Ik was daar niet blij mee, want het is feitelijk een grote vervlakking van onze ervaringen.
De beste indicatie voor hoe de tijdsversnelling werkt is de vakantie. Ga eens twee weken naar een heel ander oord en je merkt dat twee weken ontzettend lang duren, terwijl als je thuis blijft ze in een scheet voorbij trekken.
Dit liet mij concluderen dat de tijdsversnellingen wel degelijk te bedienen zijn: zij zijn afhankelijk van de menselijke ervaring zelf. Wanneer men zijn eigen leven zo inricht dat elke dag afdoende creatieve ervaringen en afwisselingen bevat vertraagd de tijd weer aanzienlijk. Ik heb daarmee experimenten uitgevoerd en deze hadden tot gevolg dat de tijd voor mij nu bijna weer net zo langzaam loopt als hij tijdens mijn kindertijd liep.
En dat is naar mijn mening hoe de tijd zou moeten lopen. Het is feitelijk een zekere vorm van onsterfelijkheid: een dag kan in een vage waas voorbijschieten of juist door intensieve beleving bijna een eeuwigheid duren.
Ik beschouw het onder controle krijgen van de tijdsversnellingen als een urgente mentale noodzaak. Door zeer intensief te leven, door elke minuut van de dag creatief te benutten, kan men greep krijgen op de tijdsversnelling om deze in oorspronkelijke staat te herstellen.

Het heeft te maken met ervaring. Voor kinderen is bijna alles wat ze ervaren nieuw. Hoe ouder je wordt, hoe minder nieuwe dingen je meemaakt. De meeste heb je op de een of andere manier al wel eens meegemaakt. Daar komt nog bij dat de meeste mensen de neiging hebben om het vertrouwde op te zoeken. En dus maken ze niets nieuws meer mee.
Daarnaast hebben jonge mensen ook minder herinneringen, waardoor ze meer geneigd zijn naar de toekomst te kijken, terwijl ouderen meer naar het verleden kijken.
Het enige wat je daaraan kan doen, is inderdaad nieuwe ervaringen opzoeken en naar de toekomst blijven kijken. Dat gaat natuurlijk hand in hand.
