En Vrijdag ligt dus de Groene Amsterdammer in de winkel met een recensie van Lindner. Al met al begint het er naar uit te zien dat het een van de meest besproken bundels is van afgelopen half jaar, waar iedereen positief over doet en niemand weet wat hij er in godsnaam als totaal van moet vinden.

Gewoon een kutboek, dus!

Risee citeert wat Vriezen op Facebook schreef. Voor de Neanderthalers die nog steeds geen Facebook account hebben citeer ik de rest wat hij schreef ook even:

Actually, I find it rich, but consistent – the construction in 4 parts works in this regard very well and does make the whole thing quite clear. Indeed, I wouldn’t want to grasp the totality if I were to review it – but then, I don’t consider that an interesting task in a review. A review should give the reader just a hint of an idea of what might be awaiting him in the book. That’s not too difficult to do. I’m sure I could write a review… an analysis that would try to account for every detail is harder, but again, I don’t think such analyses are necessarily interesting.

For my blog, I usually focus on some detail that somehow makes me, well not just makes me think – that your book does with a vengeance – but that makes me want to write an essay about – and that’s as much a function of what I’m working on myself as of what I just happen to be reading.

(In a review, I would mention how the first part is about measuring the universe, as if a subversive variation on the idea that Man the measure of everything; how the tone shifts in the Turkish part, which I would compare to how Murat Nemet-Nejat describes the stylistic features and topoi [istanbul!] of Turkish poetry in his anthology Eda; and I’d write about the extravagant plethora of influences all over the book. I’d write less specifically about the third and fourth part, though I would mention them of course; though, as I’m typing, I think the third part could be read fruitfully as the counterpart of the first part, taking the measure of the cosmos with less disturbances from the ‘human’ element, and how the fourth part explodes the structure of the whole – something like that)

Dat heeft Vriezen allemaal weer bijzonder goed gezien. Ik zie zelf de 4 delen ook als bewerkingen van de elementen:

Deel 1 – Vuur (de brandende essentie, kern)
Deel 2 – Aarde (de zintuigen)
Deel 3 – Lucht (het denken)
Deel 4 – Water (het samenvoegende, het gevoel)

Het grappige is dat bijvoorbeeld deel 3 eigenlijk een mislukt deel is, maar dat die mislukking tegelijkertijd eigen is aan het element.Als je dingen maar blijft delen mislukken ze vroeger of later altijd en de lucht symboliseert natuurlijk vooral het denken, wat bij voorbaat een vrij mislukt (want fictief) instrument is. Aldus de grap: kan een bundel een deel bevatten wat bewust mislukt? Is mislukte kunst zowiso oninteressanter dan gelukte? Ik vind dat hele mechanisme uiterst boeiend: een reeks die zoveel hooi op de vork neemt dat hij wel moet mislukken. Zal ik in mijn volgende bundel 88 gedichten over God gaan schrijven?
