Korte recensie: ‘Vuur’ van ter Balkt

Ik doe even een korte bespreking uit het hoofd. Ik heb het boek niet bij de hand (zit op een terras) dus citeren is er even niet bij.

‘Vuur’ viel mij lichtelijk tegen. Misschien waren de verwachtingen te hoog gespannen. Er valt in de bundel genoeg te genieten, daar niet van, maar er staan ook aardig wat gedichten in die ik nogal mager vond. Iets irriteert me aan ter Balkt een beetje. Ter Balkt, dat is alsof je een naakte woesteling uit de peelgrond ziet kruipen, met dennenaalden in het haar, die vervolgens de modder van zich afschuddend Samuel Beckett begint te citeren. Begrijpt u wat ik bedoel? Er is iets erg artificieels aan de hele voorstelling. Ik vraag me soms af of die hele woestheid die ter Balkt ons voorspiegelt niet teveel een gimmick is geworden. Toch zijn de beste gedichten uit de bundel wel weer juist die werken waar hij zich van woeste, wilde beelden bedient.Hij probeert dat echter te combineren met beschouwelijke werkjes, vaak over een schilderijtje wat hij ergens zag hangen of door wat overgeetaleerde cultureel correcte kunstenaars als Beckett op te voeren. Het komt op mij niet echt over als iemand die veel tijd heeft gestoken in het bestuderen van kunst, het lijkt er meer op dat ter Balkt schrijft over wat toevallig op zijn weg komt. De woesteling uit de peelgrond die per toeval het museum in struikelt, dus, wat nogal eigenaardige en niet direct hele interessante poezie oplevert.

De cavia die Milosz in een theaterstoel zette, dat is ter Balkt. Het probleem is alleen dat hij hem een pak aangetrokken heeft en een stropdas.

Er staan echter genoeg goede gedichten in ‘Vuur’ om een aanschaf, ook voor niet-Ter Balkt fans, zonder meer te rechtvaardigen. Gedichten als ‘De Dennen’, ‘Peppels’, ‘Donderdagen en Pompstations’ en ‘De Onwillige Slijpsteen’ getuigen van een grote, beeldende kracht en zijn oerdegelijke Ter Balkt epigonen.

Zwak vond ik vooral de metapozie over pozie zelf in de gedichten ‘Pozie’ en ‘Ga naar huis pozie’. Het gedichten schrijven over de pozie zelf is altijd lastiger, maar het wordt m.i. vrij funest wanneer je in zo’n situatie de zaken te helder benoemd. ‘Ga naar huis poezie, ga naar huis/ de weg was lang, ‘t weer werd slechter/ je zong het zwarte water uit zijn hol/ en nu zing je ‘t eindelijk terug… dit vind ik geen interessant concept. De afsluiting van het gedicht is nog erger ‘Ik heb altijd al horen zingen / waar jouw verblijf is achter de bergen/ Ga naar huis Poezie en neem me mee’ ..

Ter Balkt is zowiso niet zo’n denker, hij is een structuralistisch mysticus die vooral met veel dikke lagen woeste woordenverf de lezer wil overdonderen. Dat werkt niet als je dat probeert te combineren met beschouwelijkheid. Dat is het probleem wat ik in deze bundel vaak zie terugkeren. Enerzijds die woestheid, maar die poogt ter Balkt al dan niet bewust met de ultieme beschouwelijkheid, de kunstbeschouwing, te combineren wat naar mijn idee niet werkt. Al helemaal niet omdat je gewoon voelt dat de man geen consistente kunstsmaak heeft maar gewoon af en toe wat schrijft over dingen die hij toevallig tegenkomt. Niks mis mee, maar het is veel te beschaafd. Hier zien we dus eigenlijk een dilemma: enerzijds is de woestheid van ter Balkt wellicht teveel een kunstje geworden, anderzijds is het zijn belangrijkste stijlkenmerk en juist het sterkste aspect aan zijn pozie.

Dit is een dilemma waarmee elke kunstenaar of dichter vroeger of later te maken krijgt. Ik hoop echter dat Ter Balkt in zal zien dat de beschouwelijke poezie niet zijn sterkste punt is en dat hij een andere weg zal zoeken om zijn kenmerkende woestheid te kanaliseren.

Als ik ooit die ontheemde, uit de Ragnarok ontsproten verwilderde VeluweGod tegen het lijf loop hoop ik niet dat hij uit Kerouac voor zal gaan lezen.
